Xiao Dong Wei began studying the Erhu (two stringed Chinese violin) at the age of 5 with her father, and was accepted by the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at age 11. Ten years later, she earned her degree and is considered a “Master” of the Erhu. While attending college she minored in classical piano and learned to play the Guzheng (a 21-string Zither), as well as the Pipa. Since that time, Xiao Dong has received numerous awards based upon her performances and overall talent.

Xiao Dong eventually went on to perform with the Chinese Motion Picture Orchestra for four years, before moving to U.S. in 2005. During her 4 years with the orchestra, she toured throughout China and Japan.

After moving to the US in 2005, Xiao Dong began playing various gigs with many diverse musicians and musical styles. These performances included stints in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Florida, Phoenix, San Francisco and Toronto, Canada. Detroit has since become her home base and she has been warmly welcomed within the flourishing Detroit music scene by an eclectic mix of musicians and supporting fans, alike. The first thing XD did was form “Wei,” an Alt-Chamber Music trio that was made up of a Bluegrass guitarist, a mandolin player and Xiao Dong on Erhu. This instrumental group played a blend of traditional American Bluegrass, some traditional Chinese folk tunes and some originals. In 2007, Xiao Dong joined forces with new band mates Djeto Juncaj (from the Immigrant Suns) and Leo Gillis, to form XD WEI. They played a more progressive and jazz oriented style of music and released a full-length cd called “String Theory”. XD also began singing for the first time in her musical career. Always looking for something new, Xiao Dong formed the grittier and harder-hitting band called Madame XD. She teams up with bassist Ken Hottmann, to collaborate on this group’s unique sound that includes XD singing lead vocals, playing Guzheng, Pipa, Keyboards and of course, the Erhu.

Xiao Dong also does live studio work and has been featured on National Public Radio (NPR) in Detroit as well as in Ann Arbor, Lansing and Grand Rapids. At the same time, Xiao Dong continued to expand her classical career by performing, by invitation, with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in February 2007, as a guest soloist. In 2008, Xiao Dong played one of the violin parts for Bach’s Double Violin Concerto with the Southern Great Lakes Symphony Orchestra in Flat Rock, Michigan.

Also since 2007, Xiao Dong has teamed up with Japanese-born and Steinway Roster piano-virtuoso, Yuki Mack and they continue to expand their repertoire and dazzle audiences across the country.

Xiao Dong's music has been played on radio stations in U.S., Australia and Europe.
